When war broke out in 1914, I was like many of my countrymen. I was excited at the prospect of adventure and extremely proud to be able to do my part to serve my country in it's time of need. It was my duty, and I knew that if I and my fellow soldiers fought bravely and honourably, that England would be glorious in quick victory and we would all be back with our loved ones by Christmas. I would discover later how truly wrong I was.
